Director General of Health Malaysia Expresses Full Support for Sedafiat’s Clinical Waste Management Initiatives in Sabah and Labuan

The Director General of Health Malaysia, Datuk Dr Mahathar Abd Wahab, expressed his full support for Sedafiat Sdn Bhd’s commitment and transformative initiatives in clinical waste management, particularly its efforts to enhance service delivery and its proposal to relocate the treatment plant to a more suitable, safe, and environmentally friendly site, in line with current standards set by the Department of Environment.

The new treatment facility, with a capacity of 18 tonnes per day, is expected to commence construction in July 2026 and be completed by the end of 2027, significantly strengthening Sabah’s capacity for clinical waste treatment.

During the briefing session, Sedafiat’s Chief Executive Officer, Datuk Hj Ag Buhtamam Hj Ag Mahmun, highlighted that Sedafiat currently manages 7 to 8 tonnes of clinical waste per day, or approximately 230 tonnes per month, collected from 27 government hospitals, several private hospitals, more than 1,000 private clinics, health clinics, and various other institutions across Sabah. This volume is projected to increase by 5–10% annually, underscoring the need for a new facility with larger capacity.

The official visit by the Director General of Health was also attended by the Director of Engineering Services, Ministry of Health Malaysia, Ir Ts Huszian bin Husin, and the Sabah State Director of Health, Dr William Gotulis, along with senior officials from the Ministry of Health and Sedafiat’s management team. Following the visit to Sedafiat’s office, the delegation toured the Clinical Waste Treatment Plant in Lok Kawi, before continuing their visits to Beaufort Hospital and Keningau Hospital.
